All I Know’s That I Don’t Know

The new site is up! You may have even just come from there.

There are still a few issues that I’d like to see worked out, but at some point the need to have the information out there outweighs whatever nitpicking had kept me from publishing. Most of the things I’m still having trouble with stem from my lack of Javascript skills.

I have a few scripts, on a few sites. They’re all open source. And while I’ve been able to tweak them to some degree, and change the look of them, I don’t know enough to alter the function. I certainly don’t know enough to write them from scratch.

I’ve been back and forth on whether to invest the time on learning Javascript. I see quite a few job descriptions (for designers, not developers) that are calling for it. On the other hand, I’m not entirely convinced that it belongs in that skillset. I’ve learned some ASP working at Jefferson – I even learned a bit of SQL. Javascript just seems more… programmy. My husband (who I believe fears more expensive education is at the end of this line of thought), assures me that I really don’t need to learn Javascript. Most of the technology that I do know, I’ve learned out of necessity. The process usually goes like this:

1. I have a cool idea
2. Huh. I have no idea how to make that happen.
3. Research
4. Profit?

For a lot of my web projects, step 3 seems to land on Javascript. Step 4 might actually be from that South Park episode about underpants gnomes. For now, it’s lingering on the ‘some day’ pile.

And for those of you who were hoping for some Op Ivy word art, it’s coming.
